Graham Recognized with Alberta Construction Magazine Top Projects Awards
The Graham-built Terwillegar Park Footbridge in Edmonton, Alberta has been recognized with two Alberta Construction Magazine (ACM) 2016 Top Projects Awards in the Civil (Under $50 Million) and Civil Design categories.
Working with client the City of Edmonton, and designer Stantec Consulting, Graham completed construction of the world’s second longest stressed-ribbon bridge in October 2016. Spanning the North Saskatchewan River, this 262 metre (860 ft.) long footbridge is a key link within Edmonton’s River Valley, and enhances accessibility to one of North America’s largest park systems.
“This is a meaningful award to Graham, and the entire project team,” explains Michael Markowski, Operations Manager, Graham. “One of the key features of the stressed-ribbon bridge design is that the stressing cables are embedded into the deck, creating a slender and draping effect. This presented several technical challenges, all of which we overcame thanks to the collective expertise and innovations of our team – we are especially proud that we turned it over on time and under budget.”
It was important to the City of Edmonton that this project was executed in a way that mitigated environmental impact, while still delivering a final product that complimented the natural beauty of Edmonton’s River Valley.
“We are privileged to have had the opportunity for our team to showcase themselves on this unique project,” says Markowski. “The design is striking, and feedback from community stakeholders has been really positive. The environmental footprint from this project is small, but its impact to Edmonton residents and visitors is significant.”
With the completion of the Terwillegar Park Footbridge, Edmonton is only the second Canadian municipality to have a stressed-ribbon bridge – a continuation of Graham’s history of delivering iconic facilities in the communities in which we operate.
