Improving Safety Along Edmonton’s Capital LRT Line and Beyond
In 2019, Graham was contracted by the City of Edmonton to improve safety of several level crossings along the City’s light rail transit (LRT) Capital Line. And in 2020, we successfully commissioned five crossings, making them safer for pedestrians, vehicles and LRT operators by providing wider clearance, improving accessibility, identifying clear safety zones and installing warnings that are in line with the Level Crossing Regulations.
In January of this year, we commissioned our sixth upgraded crossing at 115th Avenue, all while ensuring the LRT remained operational. We now have three remaining crossings along Capital Line to upgrade – 129thAvenue, 66th Street and 125th Avenue. Once completed, we will have upgraded nine level crossings, improving safety at each one of these key intersections.
As a result of the successful commissioning to date, the City of Edmonton recently awarded Graham three additional, yet related projects. The Capital Line Wood Tie Replacement includes some adjustments to of the level crossings we are already upgrading and will now also include rail work. The LRT Signal and Electrification Rehabilitation Program will have Graham re-construct, re-signal and replace various rail-related equipment and systems that are now outdated. And finally, The City has expanded our scope on the 66th Street and 125th Avenue level crossing upgrades to also include road infrastructure and rail overhaul.
As safety is one of Graham’s core values, we are proud to improve safety for the City of Edmonton and its residents through these projects.
