Oi Kwan Place

Location: Calgary, AB

This project involved the redevelopment of an affordable seniors’ living project. Located in the downtown core and hemmed in by multi-storey buildings on both sides, Oi Kwan Place comprised: the demolition of a church, with the exception of its historic facade; the refurbishment of the adjacent 11-storey residential building; and the construction of a new 17-storey residential building on the 12-metre-wide lot where the original church once stood.

The preserved façade of the church is attached to the new residential tower, which includes a new church on the upper main floor. The new 17-storey tower connects to the 11-storey renovated building with a zero property line on all sides, and the buildings share 11 elevator lobbies, which was a first in Calgary.

Both residential buildings are designed for retirement living and, together, the buildings include common areas, offices, recreational spaces, hair salon, commercial kitchen, and dining room. The scope of work also included paved parking, and various site works and landscaping.
