Queen’s University: John Deutsch University Centre
Location: Kingston, ON
Project Overview
The John Deutsch University Centre (JDUC) redevelopment at Queen’s University establishes a prominent new campus hub at one of the institution’s most visible intersections. The project includes a 93,500 sq. ft. addition on the north side of the existing facility, completing a well-traveled edge between the university campus and the surrounding residential neighbourhoods.
Designed to serve as a central gathering space for students and the broader campus community, the new addition introduces a contemporary architectural presence while remaining sensitive to the historic collegiate context of the university. The primary space lifts the corner of the building and is framed by monumental stone fins that reinterpret traditional campus architecture while also providing shading from western sunlight.
Design and Campus Integration
The redevelopment was shaped through collaboration with student groups, university representatives and Indigenous stakeholders. These discussions helped guide the design toward a flexible and inclusive facility that responds to the evolving needs of campus life.
The project consolidates a wide range of student-focused amenities within a single destination. The new addition includes a mass timber Agora lounge designed as a central social space, along with food service and retail areas that activate the ground level and encourage gathering throughout the day.
Building Redevelopment and Construction
The project involved the complete demolition of the original 1974 north addition and the construction of a new facility that includes a two-storey basement mechanical service area and multiple program spaces. The new building is connected to the existing John Deutsch University Centre heritage structure through a corridor link, allowing both buildings to function as an integrated facility.
In addition to the new construction, the existing building—which houses student club spaces, 91 residence rooms, and additional food service and retail areas—underwent partial demolition to accommodate new mechanical and electrical systems. Interior upgrades were also completed throughout the building, improving finishes and modernizing the facility while maintaining its historic character.
Student Hub and Community Impact
The redeveloped JDUC strengthens its role as a central destination for campus life. The facility supports more than 100 student clubs and organizations, providing flexible spaces for meetings, collaboration and social interaction.
By combining new construction with the revitalization of a heritage building, the project enhances both the functionality and identity of the university’s student centre while reinforcing its connection to the surrounding community.
Sustainability
Environmental performance was a key consideration throughout the project. The building is designed to achieve LEED® Gold certification upon formal submission, incorporating sustainable design strategies that support long-term operational efficiency while contributing to Queen’s University’s broader sustainability objectives.
