Mission Bridge Rehabilitation
Location: Calgary, AB
Project Overview
Graham served as General Contractor for the Mission Bridge Rehabilitation project, delivering critical infrastructure improvements to preserve and modernize one of Calgary’s oldest and most recognizable river crossings.
For more than a century, Mission Bridge has provided an important connection for people walking, cycling, and driving between the communities of Rideau Roxboro and Mission. The rehabilitation program was designed to extend the bridge’s service life while improving safety, accessibility, and the overall user experience—all while maintaining the structure’s historic character.
Preserving Heritage While Improving Performance
The project focused on upgrading the bridge to better serve current and future users while respecting the integrity of the original structure.
Structural rehabilitation work was completed on both the bridge and adjacent retaining wall to enhance durability and long-term performance. Historic elements were carefully preserved throughout construction while modern infrastructure improvements were integrated into the existing bridge.
Improving Accessibility and Connectivity
Pedestrian and active transportation improvements were central to the rehabilitation scope. Pathways were widened and new cantilevered overhangs were added to create a safer and more comfortable experience for pedestrians and cyclists.
Additional intersection upgrades along 4 Street and Elbow Drive improved traffic operations, strengthened pedestrian safety, and enhanced multimodal connectivity between surrounding neighbourhoods.
Delivering Complex Urban Infrastructure Renewal
The rehabilitation required extensive planning and phased construction to maintain functionality while completing significant structural upgrades.
Project delivery included placement of more than 1,385 cubic metres of concrete and completion of 618 square metres of concrete repairs across the structure. In total, approximately 79,000 labour hours supported the successful renewal of this important community connection, helping ensure Mission Bridge continues serving Calgarians for decades to come.
