Grade Separation at 78 Avenue SE and Ogden Pedestrian Tunnel
Location: Calgary, AB
The 78 Avenue Underpass project is a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at improving transportation safety and enabling future Green Line LRT development through the community of Ogden in Calgary. The project involves constructing a vehicle underpass and pedestrian tunnel beneath the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) railway corridor. This infrastructure enhancement will improve connectivity between Ogden Road S.E. and Ogden Dale Road S.E., replacing the existing at-grade crossing at 69 Avenue S.E.
As the General Contractor, Graham is constructing a railway overpass, also known as a grade separation structure, at 78 Avenue S.E., enabling an extension of 78 Avenue S.E. beneath the CPKC mainline. This new structure will allow vehicular traffic to safely access the industrial area east of the railway right-of-way. Once the 78 Avenue S.E. railway overpass is opened to the public, the existing at-grade crossing at 69 Avenue S.E. will be permanently closed.
The project also includes constructing a pedestrian tunnel connecting the future Ogden station with the east side of the CPKC right-of-way and Ogden Dale Road S.E. Approximately 26 trains operate daily on CPKC’s mainline; this complex enabling works project reduces schedule risks and enhances overall safety as preparations continue for the main LRT construction. The underpass and pedestrian tunnel form a vital component of the Green Line enabling works, significantly enhancing mobility and pedestrian safety in the future station area.
