Humber Sewage Pumping Station
Location: Pickering, ON
Project Overview
The Humber Sewage Pumping Station Expansion forms a key component of York Region’s Regional Sewage Servicing Strategy for the North West Vaughan area. The project supports the Region’s objective of accommodating future population growth while providing reliable and sustainable wastewater servicing.
As part of the West Vaughan Sewage Servicing Project, the capacity of the Humber Sewage Pumping Station is being expanded from 1,700 L/s to 2,400 L/s. The work includes the construction of a new Humber Sewage Pumping Station as well as the decommissioning and retrofit of the existing facility. Together, these upgrades will enhance the Region’s wastewater infrastructure and provide additional capacity to support long-term development in the surrounding communities.
Site Preparation and Environmental Protection
Construction is taking place within an active wetland adjacent to the Humber River, requiring careful environmental controls and site management. The project begins with the installation of double-layered silt fencing and site hoarding to protect surrounding waterways and sensitive habitat. A raised access road is constructed around the work area to prevent runoff, debris, and sediment from entering the river during construction activities.
Clean backfill material is imported and placed across the site to elevate the new pumping station platform by approximately five metres, raising the facility above the existing floodplain and improving long-term flood resilience.
Foundations and Structural Works
Deep foundation construction includes the installation of 30 driven piles and 15 caissons to support the new pumping station structures. Two circular diaphragm wall structures are also constructed to form key below-grade components of the facility. These elements provide the structural capacity required for the pumping infrastructure while maintaining stability in the challenging wetland soil conditions.
Once complete, the upgraded Humber Sewage Pumping Station will provide increased capacity and improved operational resilience, supporting York Region’s long-term wastewater servicing strategy for the rapidly growing North West Vaughan area.
