PEMAC Launches Development of Shutdown Turnaround Certification Program with Support from Graham Construction

October 14, 2025

Mississauga (October 9, 2025) PEMAC Asset Management Association of Canada has initiated the development of a Shutdown Turnaround Management Professional education and certification program that will address a critical gap in asset management training. The initiative launches with initial funding and industry support from Graham.

The program will consist of a series of 6 to 8 courses focused on key areas of such as strategy planning, scheduling, risk management, budgeting, quality control, and contract management. Designed for professionals involved in small to large Shutdowns, Turnarounds, & Outages (STOs), the program will culminate in a capstone project, which will enable participants to apply learning to manage STO’s more efficiently saving billions of dollars. Successful completion of the program will lead to a professional certification, the only of its kind.

“Shutdowns, turnarounds, and outages are among the most complex, costly, and high-stakes operations in industry. Yet, there is currently no standardized training or certification program for managing these events in Canada,” shares Ron Bettin, co-chair of the PEMAC’s STO certification program development committee. “This initiative will provide industry-leading, peer-developed curriculum to set the standard and transform STO management in Canada.”

PEMAC is inviting interested parties to engage with this initiative through sponsorship opportunities, contributing subject matter expertise, and/or share training content, to shape curriculum relevant across all industry sectors.

As a recognized leader in construction and project management, Graham Construction’s early investment in the Shutdown Turnaround Management Professional program highlights the vital role of industry collaboration in shaping high-impact training for asset management professionals.

“Graham is proud to be the first founding sponsor of PEMAC’s Shutdown Turnaround education and certification program,” says Corey Smart, Vice President, Services, Graham. “This initiative aligns with our commitment to excellence in project execution and workforce development. By investing in this program, we are helping to build a stronger, more capable industry.”
