Graham Awarded Progressive Design-Build Contract for New Fort St. James Hospital

April 21, 2022

Following Graham’s award last year of the Design Early Works Agreement for the Stuart Lake Hospital redevelopment, we are proud to announce we recently signed the Design-Build Agreement for the same project. This is Infrastructure BC’s first progressive design-build contract and the hospital will be constructed for the Northern Health Authority.

The new hospital will be three times larger than the current one. It will have 27 beds, including 18 long-term care beds. There will be an expanded emergency department with two treatment rooms, a trauma bay and ambulance bay. A laboratory and diagnostic imaging will also be part of the new facility, including a primary care clinic.

The hospital is a much-needed investment as the surrounding area consists of close to 300,000 residents, including the First Nations communities of the Takla Lake First Nation, Tl’azt’en Nation, Binche Whut’en First Nation, Nak’azdli Whut’en, and Yekooche First Nation.

The hospital will consolidate services currently being offered in Fort St. James to one location, reducing the distance patients and staff need to go for diagnostic imaging and lab services. It will be home to physicians, visiting specialists, substance-use supports, home and community care, and public health.

The new hospital will be built on the same site as the existing one. Once complete, the existing facility will be demolished to make space for parking. Construction is slated to start in June 2022.

Graham is thrilled to be delivering this progressive design-build contract and improving healthcare for residents in the region with a new, state-of-the-art facility.
