Critical Calgary Roadway at 144 Avenue NW Opens to Traffic

October 8, 2024

Graham is excited to announce that after more than two years of construction, the 144 Avenue NW improvements from Sage Hill Drive to 24 Street NW are now complete and open to traffic. This new 1.2 km roadway, which includes a bridge over West Nose Creek, provides the only continuous east-west connection north of Stoney Trail and significantly improves mobility and connectivity for the communities of Sage Hill, Nolan Hill, Carrington, Livingston, and Evanston.

The 144 Avenue NW improvements include a new bridge over West Nose Creek, an expansion of Calgary’s pathway and cycling network and utility and public space improvements.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek says the road expansion is an important step in supporting the city’s growth.

“By improving our road and pathway network, we’re helping communities access the services they need and creating a more connected city for everyone,” said Gondek in a statement. (CBC News)

Construction Scope

Key features of the project include a multi-use pathway system, new stormwater and electrical infrastructure, and noise and retaining walls along the fence line of nearby residences. At the intersection of 144 Avenue and Symons Valley Road, utility upgrades to storm, sanitary, and water systems were completed alongside the intersection widening.

Graham Construction led the work, including the construction of the 52-metre bridge, using a 620-ton crane to install 2.8-metre-tall girders in a complex operation that required passing the girders between cranes. The bridge deck construction, formwork, and concrete pours were also self-performed by Graham.

Environmental Considerations

The project was in an environmentally sensitive area near West Nose Creek and surrounding wetlands. Graham submitted an ECO/ESC plan to the City of Calgary and regularly inspected and maintained control measures. The creek realignment involved bypass pumping and water quality monitoring to ensure minimal environmental impact.

This significant infrastructure improvement will greatly enhance connectivity and quality of life in the surrounding communities.
