Lethbridge Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Upgrades Awarded to Graham

September 12, 2025

Graham is pleased to announce our continued growth across Alberta with the award of the Lethbridge WTP – Process Redundancy and Medium Voltage Upgrades project.

The Lethbridge Water Treatment Plant is a critical facility that operates 24/7 to provide clean water to over 133,000 residents across 10 municipalities in southern Alberta. The facility has an average demand of 65 MLD, with peak demand reaching up to approximately 135 MLD.

Given how much the community relies on the water treatment plant, this project will make necessary upgrades to increase the reliability of the clarification process and electrical systems.

The existing facility relies on two solid contact clarifiers, each with a capacity of 75 MLD, with no redundancy in place should one clarifier fail during high demand periods. To address this, a new high-rate clarifier will be constructed to support the existing 40-year-old solid contact clarifiers along with upgrades to the ancillary chemical and support systems associated with the clarifiers.

Additional upgrades to the electrical systems will include:

  • Installation of new transformers
  • Two new main electrical feeds to the plant
  • Switchgear
  • Decommissioning of aging, near end-of-life electrical equipment

Graham worked closely with the City of Lethbridge during the tender process to de-risk the project and offer practical construction solutions tailored to their needs.

Construction began in September and is scheduled to be completed early in 2028.
