Granville Bridge Rehabilitation Advances in Active Urban Corridor

Project Overview

The Granville Bridge south approach ramps rehabilitation project is advancing in downtown Vancouver, with major components complete and remaining work progressing toward completion.

Originally constructed in 1954, the Granville Bridge is a key transportation corridor serving downtown Vancouver. The project is located at the entrance to Granville Island, one of Canada’s most visited destinations, making traffic management a central consideration throughout construction. Work has been carefully planned and sequenced to minimize disruption while maintaining safe and continuous use of the bridge.

Scope of Work

The project involves multiple coordinated scopes focused on extending the service life of the bridge and improving long-term performance.

Bridge bearing replacements were completed using a proprietary jacking system that allowed the bridge deck to be lifted from its supporting piers while traffic remained in operation. Expansion joints across the structure have been fully replaced to improve durability and accommodate movement.

Work is ongoing to replace rubberized joint seals along the main approach, with activities scheduled during overnight periods to reduce impacts to daytime traffic. In parallel, concrete restoration and epoxy crack injection are being carried out across the south ramps to address deterioration and strengthen structural integrity.

Construction Approach

As work progressed, additional areas requiring repair were identified. The team adapted construction planning and sequencing to address these conditions while maintaining schedule performance and minimizing disruption to the surrounding area.

Safety & Environmental Controls

The project has been delivered with a strong focus on safety, achieving zero lost time incidents to date.

Construction activities have also included specialized environmental controls. This includes the careful removal of materials containing asbestos within the original bridge deck, as well as lead abatement associated with existing coatings. These measures have been implemented in accordance with regulatory requirements while maintaining project progress.

The project reflects a coordinated approach to rehabilitation work in a complex urban environment, balancing technical requirements with the need to maintain continuous public access.
