​Lethbridge Water Treatment Plant Upgrades

Project Overview

Graham is serving as General Contractor for the Lethbridge Water Treatment Plant – Medium Voltage Electrical Upgrades and Process Redundancy project, a critical infrastructure initiative that will strengthen the reliability and long-term performance of one of southern Alberta’s essential water treatment facilities.

Operating continuously to provide safe, reliable drinking water to more than 133,000 residents across 10 municipalities, the Lethbridge Water Treatment Plant is being upgraded to support long-term population growth and improve system resilience through expanded treatment and electrical infrastructure.

Increasing Treatment Capacity and Reliability

The existing facility currently relies on two solid contact clarifiers, each with a treatment capacity of 75 megalitres per day (MLD). With limited redundancy available during periods of peak demand or maintenance activities, the project introduces a new high-rate clarifier to increase flexibility and strengthen overall system reliability.

The work also includes upgrades to supporting chemical and process systems to improve treatment performance, operational efficiency, and long-term maintainability while integrating with the plant’s existing 40-year-old infrastructure.

Modernizing Critical Electrical Infrastructure

To improve reliability and support future operational needs, the project includes significant electrical system upgrades across the facility. Scope includes the installation of new transformers, the addition of two new main electrical feeds to enhance power security, modernization of switchgear, and replacement of aging end-of-life equipment.

Together, these improvements will help ensure the plant can continue delivering dependable water service to the region for decades to come.
