Fish Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades
Location: Calgary, AB
Project Overview
Graham is serving as General Contractor for the Fish Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades project, delivering major infrastructure improvements to support Calgary’s growing wastewater treatment needs.
Constructed in the 1960s, the Fish Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant is one of three wastewater treatment facilities serving Calgary. As southern Calgary continues to grow, the facility requires significant modernization to increase treatment capacity, improve operational performance, and support long-term wastewater infrastructure needs.
This project delivers comprehensive upgrades across the plant’s treatment systems and supporting infrastructure to strengthen reliability, accommodate future demand, and enhance overall process efficiency.
Expanding Treatment Capacity and Process Performance
A key component of the project is the conversion of the existing secondary treatment process to Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR), improving treatment capability and supporting evolving environmental performance requirements.
The upgrade includes construction of two new bioreactor trains and modifications to the six existing secondary clarifiers. Additional process improvements include upgrades to the existing primary treatment clarifiers, enhancements to the ultraviolet (UV) disinfection facility, and the addition of a new headworks facility to optimize plant operations from intake through final treatment.
Enhancing Biosolids and Supporting Infrastructure
To improve biosolids handling and operational efficiency, the project includes upgrades to the existing four digesters, construction of a new digested sludge storage tank, and installation of waste activated sludge thickening facilities. New sludge fermenters and sludge blending systems will further support process optimization and long-term plant performance.
Supporting Long-Term Operations
The project also includes construction of a new Operations, Maintenance and Administration (OMA) Facility to support plant staff and day-to-day operations. Electrical upgrades throughout the site will expand power capacity and improve reliability, helping ensure the facility can continue serving Calgary’s growing population for decades to come.
