Shaganappi Pump Station
Location: Calgary, AB
The Shaganappi Pump Station—Calgary’s largest—supplies drinking water to over 200,000 residents. After 40 years in service, the station required replacement due to aging infrastructure and obsolete equipment. Graham was selected as the General Contractor to construct a new potable water pump station and retrofit the existing feedermain discharge configuration to integrate with the new facility.
Given the interconnection with the active feedermain system, the project posed complex challenges that demanded a high degree of planning, scheduling, and coordination. Graham leveraged its extensive experience in delivering integrated, multi-disciplinary scopes—civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, and controls—to minimize and manage planned service interruptions.
The scope of work for the new pump station included excavation, shoring, and backfilling on a compact site (“postage stamp” footprint) adjacent to a public parking lot, café, residential buildings, and commercial properties. Construction of the new pump house involved a detailed cast-in-place concrete structure with structural steel and masonry components. The building houses overhead cranes, process mechanical piping, valves, pumps, electrical systems, and instrumentation required for distribution operations.
A 999kW natural gas standby generator was installed to ensure emergency power reliability. The building’s exterior features a composite panel system, glazing, and brick veneer. Decommissioning the original facility involved retrofitting discharge piping and feedermain connections to fully integrate the new system and enable the safe demolition of the existing structure.
Now fully commissioned and operational, the new Shaganappi Pump Station offers improved capacity, functionality, and system redundancy—ensuring the continued delivery of safe, reliable drinking water for decades to come.
