Douglas Border Crossing
Location: Surrey, British Columbia
Project Overview
The Douglas Border Crossing project involved the construction of a new port of entry facility in Canada’s Pacific Region, serving one of the busiest border crossings in the country. The development is purpose-built to support customs, immigration, and inspection operations within a secure and highly active environment.
The project includes a main administration building for Customs and Immigration, a tertiary inspection facility, public amenities, inspection booths, and a network of interconnecting walkways with protective canopies. Together, these elements create an integrated operational environment that supports the efficient processing of people and goods across the border.
Design and Construction
Designed to LEED Gold standards, the facility incorporates a range of sustainable features aligned with long-term environmental performance. Notably, limestone cladding from the previous facility was carefully salvaged and reused, preserving a connection to the site’s history while reducing material waste.
The overall design reflects both functional and architectural considerations, balancing operational efficiency with durability and environmental responsibility. Building systems and material selections were coordinated to meet the demands of continuous use in a high-traffic setting.
Operational Environment
Construction was carried out within an active port of entry, requiring strict adherence to security protocols and careful coordination to maintain uninterrupted border operations. Ensuring continuous traffic flow for both commercial and passenger vehicles was a central priority throughout the project.
Phasing and sequencing of work were planned to minimize disruption, while maintaining secure access and protecting sensitive areas of operation. Environmental and historical considerations were also carefully managed within the site boundaries.
Outcome
The completed Douglas Border Crossing delivers a purpose-built facility that enhances operational efficiency, security, and user experience at a critical point of entry. By integrating multiple inspection and support functions within a cohesive environment, the project strengthens the long-term performance and reliability of border operations in the region.
