RCMP Fort Walsh Dorm

Location: Regina, SK

Project Overview

Located at the RCMP Training Depot in Regina, Saskatchewan, the Fort Walsh Dorm is a purpose-built accommodation facility designed to support the training and daily operations of RCMP cadets. The three-storey, approximately 75,000-square-foot building provides housing for up to 180 cadets, forming a key component of the broader training environment at the Depot.

The facility is designed to balance residential comfort with the functional requirements of a structured training program. It supports the routines, movement, and day-to-day needs of cadets while aligning with the operational standards of a national training institution.

Design and Construction

Constructed using cast-in-place concrete, the building is designed for durability, longevity, and performance within a high-use institutional setting. The exterior incorporates a combination of brick veneer, cementitious panels, and aluminum curtain wall systems, creating a resilient building envelope suited to long-term use.

Inside, the design emphasizes both function and quality. An open clerestory extends from the main level through to the upper roof, introducing natural light into shared spaces and enhancing the overall environment. Interior finishes include exposed polished concrete, ceramic and resilient flooring, along with oak casework and slat ceiling features that contribute to a clean, durable, and cohesive interior.

Operational Environment

As part of an active national training facility, the dormitory was delivered within a highly controlled and secure environment. Construction activities were governed by strict federal security requirements, including comprehensive background checks and controlled site access for all personnel.

The facility itself is designed to integrate seamlessly into the daily operations of the Depot. Its layout supports efficient circulation, supervision, and access, ensuring it functions effectively within the broader campus while maintaining the standards expected of a federal training institution.

Outcome

The completed Fort Walsh Dorm provides a dedicated, purpose-built residential environment that supports the training and development of RCMP cadets. By aligning durability, security, and functionality within a single facility, the project contributes to the long-term performance and operational readiness of Canada’s national policing program.
