Freeway Lanes Open Up on I-405/85 St. Interchange

Project Updates

Bellevue, WA – Graham is pleased to provide an update on the I-405/Northeast 85th Street Interchange project. Graham is collaborating with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), the City of Kirkland, and Sound Transit on this innovative three-level interchange, which includes a lower level for local traffic on 85th Street beneath I-405, a middle level for transit riders, carpoolers, and pedestrians, and an upper level for I-405 freeway traffic.

In early January 2025, crews placed 30 girders for new I-405 bridge structures, bringing the total to 48 girders across six bridge structures. Additional work on drainage, electrical systems, grading, and roadways continues. Recently, crews achieved a significant milestone by opening three new freeway lanes on the I-405 southbound bridge structure to traffic.

The northbound lanes are currently being connected to the mainline roadway and are expected to open following weeknight lane shifts in mid-May. This will occur before demolition begins on the old bridge structures.

About the Project

Located along Interstate 405 in Kirkland, Washington, the I-405/Northeast 85th Street Interchange and Inline Station project involves replacing the existing two-level cloverleaf interchange with a new three-level structure. The project also includes local improvements on Northeast 85th Street and at its intersection with 114th Avenue Northeast/Kirkland Way. Construction on this USD $234M project started in early 2023 and is scheduled for completion in 2026.
